Class Rooms Connect to the MMC |
On Thurs Oct 23, 1997 during the opening of the Argonne National Laboratory Information Center two middle school class rooms (Central School of Lemont, Illinois, and St. Dominic School, from Bolingbrook, Illinois, connected to the ANL TelePresence Microscopy Site, part of the MMC, held a video conference with each other and Materials Scientist Nestor J. Zaluzec. They viewed images recorded from using a Scanning Electron Microscope in ANL and operated the telerobotic MacroScope over the Internet. They also visited the Microscape Virtual Laboratory using the WWW. The Students from Central School in Lemont participated remotely using the computer systems at the new Argonne Information Center, while the students from St. Dominic, were connected via an Internet link directly from their classroom which was provided by their local Cable TV provider, Media One. This was the first multi-class simultaneous distance learning activity of the Materials MicroCharacterization Collaboratory.

"It really expand the walls fo the classroom", teacher Judy Bonkalski said. Earlier this year, her students watched from their classroom as Zaluzec examined a computer chip under a high power electron microscope in his lab. "It's almost as good as if thery were sitting in the lab, " Zaluzec said, adding fellow scientists from around the world also can work together on-line. " The idea is to share research, data and ideas"... |

A computer station linked to an electron microscope laboratory allows visitors to observe and control experiments from the computer while talking with Argonne Materials Scientist Nestor Zaluzec who runs the lab. His TelePresence Microscopy (TPM) project also offers a web site (http://tpm.amc.anl.gov) allowing anyone with access to the World Wide Web to tap into his lab. |
The TPM Site is part of the DoE 2000 Materials Microcharacterization Collaboratory (http://tpm.amc.anl.gov/mmc) funded under DMS-BES, DMS-EE, and CTR-MICS. The MMC is developing the technology basis for accessing expertise and instrumentation at DoE Materials User Facilities from off-site locations by creating a single cohesive virtual laboratory, accessible from anywhere on the Internet.
