Visit by Vice President Al Gore to
Materials MicroCharacterization Collaboratory

Jan. 21, 1998

During a visit to Oak Ridge National Laboratory Vice President Al Gore had an opportunity to explore the latest developments in on-line collaborative environments. Using the MMC as a example Michael Wright (ORNL) demonstrated on-line links to HFIR beam lines and then connected to the LIVE MMC Multi-Site WWW Site. Following a short discussion on remote collaboration with Wright, V.P. Gore, Larry Allard (ORNL) and Edgar Voelkl (ORNL) conducted a real-time interactive session on a remote microscope at ORNL. There they controlled the microscope, recorded images and transferred the data into an Electronic Notebook. Al Geist (ORNL) then demonstrated the Electronic Notebook, which now contained the image which VP Gore had just recorded. Using a writing tablet, the Vice President signed the notebook and received a printed copy to take back to Washington with him.
